The Nigerian body of Christ is enlarging in coast with the springing up of new ministers of Gods called to continue preaching with the words of God. Well, OmoElublog caught up with one of these men of God, in person of Apostle David Adekunle of the Chapel of Rest Ministry, Ajegunle Apapa, Lagos and he took his time to take us through his journey to his pastoral work and roles of the men of God in our larger society among many others. It’s another interesting engagement. Sit and read!
OmoElu: Good afternoon sir. Can I meet you in a every detailed way. I mean, your name, where you hail from, your Educational background, what you do for a living, your story to this end and everything you care to tell our readers?
Pastor David Adekunle: My name is Apostle David Adekunle. I’m from Oyo state – Ido local government in Ibadan to be precise. I had my primary school Education at Maryola Nursery and Pry school, Ibitoye street at Ajegunle Apapa Lagos.
Then I proceeded to Araromi Sec. School, Orile, Sari Iganmu, Lagos, but finished at Rebecca College also in Lagos.
I later went to the Redeem Bible School in the year 2011 and became a full time minister of God but got ordained as The General Overseer of “Chapel Of Rest Ministry” on 28th of April 2018.
I also had a short stay at Petfi Film Institute, 6, Rasmon Street, near Wema Bank, off Osolo way, Ajao Estate Lagos, where I studied Music in year 2012 and graduated in 2014, as the best student of the Music Dept with an OND Certificate.
So, apart from being a pastor, I’m also a musicologist with some songs to my credit.
OmoElu: Oh Good. So you’re a typical Ibadan man but lives in Lagos?
Pastor David: Yes o. I have not even lived in Ibadan before.
OmoElu: OK. As a layman that I am, can you pls tell us what is the difference between a musician and a musicologist? And are you not a musician?
Pastor David: Sorry about this confusion. Well, I studied Music Technology particularly, so we call ourselves musicologists, because we studied the Art of music making not just like anyone else who could only just sing. I’m also a gospel singer with recorded songs and I was once a chorister (choir) in the church, before becoming a full time minister of God.
OmoElu: OK. Cool. The name of your Church Chapel Rest Ministry, what does the “Rest” in it mean? Is it a resting church? Smile.
Pastor David: Well, the bibles says in
Matthew 11:28 that “Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavily laden, and I will give you rest”.
In 11:29 it says, “Take my yoke upon you, and lean off me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls”.
Also in 11:30 it continues, “For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light”. So simply, what rest is all about is that those that are down with the troubles and affliction of the world, there is a place of prayer where their souls find solution (rest) to there problem. So, you can see the relationship?
OmoElu: Hmn. Good to know. So how do you balance music with pastoral works? I know being a pastor and an overseer is a big work and joining music ministry to it will be more hectic.
Pastor David : It’s part of my calling, so I definitely must have find time for it. Being a Pastor or Overseer is not a title, it is a responsibility and one of it is Music. Music is one of the criteria of an Apostle as a calling.
OmoElu: Ok, let me pick you up from the word “Responsibility” – you just mentioned. As a pastor, what do you think are the core responsibilities of men of God to their followers? As someone once said, religious centres are now miracle centres where people with barrenness, those looking for partners for marriage, those looking for money, jobs, progress in life go to? Do you help people to do all these too?
Pastor David: The bible says in
Mark 16:15 that “And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature”. Our core responsibility is to go into the word and preach the gospel, where those that receive Christ are edified with the word of God preparing them for the second coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.
OmoElu: So you only want to preach words of God, you don’t do deliverance??
Pastor David: All those things I mentioned above are to deliver people from their difficulties and that’s why the gift of the spirit is there, but the most important thing is to use those gifts for the glory of God and this also a means to preach the gospel. Note, that a gift is given for a purpose to be fulfilled.
OmoElu: Alright sir. There is a belief that Nigeria is an heavily religious country with increasing growth of religious centres and ministries, yet there is a decreasing level of moral values especially on dressing, crime and other forms of illicit ways. Do you agree or disagree and why?
Pastor David: We are approaching the end of world, in which even the bible said even the very elect will be deceived. The bible also says at the end of time, so many false prophets will come up and say they are preaching in the name Christ, teaching heresy, as such make most of our youths to go astray and our believe is in our heart.
And again, Christianity now has been cold and not like when our fore father’s first received it, because we are at the end time. Just like I do tell them, that what you think from your heart is what you reflect outwardly, if the heart is corrupt, everything about you is corrupt too. The bible says in Matthew 15:11, that “Not that which goeth into the mouth defileth a man; but that which cometh out of the mouth, this defileth a man”. So I agree totally with the notion of immortality in our country today.
Omoelu: Thank you sir. So, what do you think we can collectively do particularly from people like you as pastors, or we just have to let people be?
Pastor David: It starts from all of us. We need to move closer to God by reading the bible very well as Christians and also follow what the bible says and not what your pastor say. Again, we need to go back to the way our father’s received Christ as their Lord and personal saviour. We should not stop preaching the gospel, telling people about the truth to enlighten them with the word of God.
Lastly, we shouldn’t stop saying the truth no matter the position we find ourselves
The bible says in Romans 10:17 that ” Faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God”. So we will keep telling them the truth in our own possible ways.
OmoElu: Thank you sir. Ok, while growing up, I know there are many people that church is another part of their life after school, and many got involved in many groups from choir to drama to ushering, and many have developed their talents through this.
Today many can sing, beat drum, play instruments, act movies and more. Do you agree our churches can be talent discovery points and catch them young centres? And how do we guide children to be productive in Godly ways?
Pastor David: Thank you for this. Everything is centered in church.
Talent are discovered there easily with help of the Holy spirit. Majority of those doing secular music today started from the church but backslide due to the love of the world. Well, God should just help us as Christians and it is not a day work but an everyday race because the bible says in 1 Peter 5:8 that “Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour”./That’s why devils main target are the children of God. The bible also says in Proverbs 22:6 that “Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it”. At the very young age we should teach them with the word of God and pray for them always.
OmoElu: Beautiful! As a gospel singer, let ask this, do you see this as a career or your side hobby?
Pastor David: I simply see it as calling, that must be fulfilled.
OmoElu: What’s your biggest wish in the gospel ministry, say like in the next 5 to 10yrs from now.
Pastor David: To enlarge the God’s kingdom, either by his words or by music all over the world.
OmoElu: Ok, tell me sir, Who are your greatest influence in the music industry. And by this, I mean people you listen to regularly and feel ministered to, and those you can’t do without them, or even wish to be like them with your songs.
Pastor David: The truth is that the Holy spirit has been my mentor all this while.
I may listen to a song due to the message not because of the singers but gospel singers like Mama Bola Are, Baba Ojo Ade, Don moen etc are worth emulating for me, due to their stand and work in Christ because I have been blessed with their songs but holy sprit is my mentor.
OmoElu: How many songs have you produced and which one do you see as your best or favorite?
Pastor David: I have had up to 10 songs and I don’t have favorite because all are inspired by the Holy spirit. I released one of my singles called JABURATA on the 1st of Jan 2019 while I’m about to release another one soon, this month of September 2020, called “ORE OFE” – Grace.
OmoElu: Many men of God answer many titles from Evangelist to Pastor to Reverend, Bishop, Apostle, Most Senior Apostle and more – what bring about these titles and why are you an Apostle not Most Senior Apostle, since you own your own church?
Pastor David: I’m being called Apostle by calling not by title. And as I have said earlier on this, I see the calling as responsibility not of title. More so I’m not the founder of the church just the general overseer of the ministry.
OmoElu: Alright! But this calling, how does God call someone? And how can people know men of God that are called and those that called themselves?
Pastor David: God call’s in different way but for one goal. Even singing is a calling. Is just about knowing what God has called you for. The bible says in
1 John 4:1 “Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world”. Which means you too need to be a carrier of the Holy ghost. The bible says by their fruit we shall know them. If a devil could identity the real man of God how much more a child of God.
OmoElu: Where do you pray and hope to see your church ministry in the next 5yrs and what do you want people to remember the name Apostle David Adekunle for?
Pastor David: To be one of the most soul winning churches in the world and I want people to remember me for my works in Christ. Not here for the fame.
OmoElu: Are you married or still single? Because I know most pastors are encouraged to get married to avert female temptations.
Pastor David: Smiles. To the glory of God, I’m happily married to my lovely wife (Temitope Mojirayo Adekunle ) since 28th Nov 2015 and we have been blessed with two lovely kids.
OmoElu: Oh. Great! May the good lord continue to watch over all. Now, as a father and husband, how do you balance your spiritual assignments such that it doesn’t affect the home front?
Pastor David: It is very simple. The church starts from your home. If you can’t balance your home you can’t balance your church, and above all, with the right woman and the help of the Holy spirit, everything becomes easier.
OmoElu: Ok. What’s the address of your Church, how can people get your songs and preachings, do you have social media handles, if yes, you may share them with your fans, lovers of your ministry and people who may, readers of this blog.
Pastor David: Sure, I have social accounts. Our Church address is at No 1 Ajenifuja street, Off moshalashi Bus Stop Ojo road, Ajegunle Apapa Lagos.

OmoElu: Finally before we end this interview session, one last message for people reading this post sir, and to those who may come across this in future?
Pastor David: What he has done on the cross brings answer to all our needs. We should just keep praying and be waiting for the second coming of our Lord Jesus Christ because he’s coming very soon.
And no matter what we are passing through now, he has prepared a better place for us. And lastly, whatever we may find our self doing, we should do it diligently – be it as a pastor, prophet, Apostle or even a singer, what ever your calling is, because we are going to give account of everything in our possession.
OmoElu: Alright. Thank you so much for your time Pastor David Adekunle of the Chapel of Rest Ministry Apapa Lagos.
